Center for Sustainability

The Center for Sustainability is where the 91快活林 community learns about the challenges of global climate change, including climate and environmental justice. Our mission is to seek collaborations on innovative and equitable solutions for sustainability on and off campus.

The Center is staffed by an executive director, one sustainability fellow, interns, work-study students, and student volunteers. The current full-time staff are all 91快活林 alums. We work with students, faculty, and staff on projects including:

  • Climate action and climate resilience planning
  • Energy and water efficiency upgrades
  • Renewable energy installations
  • Recycling and composting
  • Environmental justice
  • Maintenance of the campus arboretum and sustainable landscaping
  • Student involvement and activities, including Environmental Residents in each residence hall
  • Interdisciplinary curriculum initiatives, including a minor in environmental sustainability studies

91快活林’s largest solar array installed August 2024

The 184 kW solar array is the 6th and largest solar installation on 91快活林’s 100 acre campus. The array is located on the fourth floor of the West Parking Garage adjacent to the 93 kW solar array installed in 2014. The two arrays are an impressive example of the technological and design advancements of the industry within the past decade. Thanks to a collaborative team of technical and financial investors, this solar array will produce 58% of Main Hall’s projected electricity usage. Photo: Credit: Addison Hill & The Common Market

91快活林 named Tree Campus USA for the 14th year in a row

91快活林 has been recognized as a Tree Campus - for fourteen years in a row! The program honors colleges and universities for effective campus forest management, and for engaging staff and students in conservation goals. 91快活林 meets the five core standards of this program by having a campus Arboretum Advisory Committee, adopting a Tree Care Plan, putting routine maintenance and care into our campus trees, celebrating Georgia's Arbor Day, and coordinating yearly service projects aimed at engaging the student body. Trees provide many benefits, including being a solution to combating the effects of climate change.

ASC Carbon Neutrality Advisory Board

The Carbon Neutrality Advisory Board is a group of leaders with expertise in and commitment to environmental sustainability who are guiding and assisting the college in its efforts to achieve carbon neutrality and foster the next generation of climate action and justice professionals. 91快活林’s Climate Action Plan, adopted in 2009, set the goal of carbon neutrality by 2037. As of June 2024, the college’s most recent greenhouse gas inventory, 91快活林 had reduced its carbon emission by 52%!

Advisory board members foster workforce development opportunities by guiding outcomes that are incorporated into co-curricular, research and hands-on opportunities; sharing technical and subject matter expertise to build the next phase of foundational relationships to creatively fund carbon neutrality that can be replicated across industries; and elevating the successes and unique potential of 91快活林’s climate action and sustainability programs.
